Swing Path Tilt

The angle between the ground and the path the bat traces in the 40 milliseconds before contact.

32°2026 MLB average (2025: 32°)

Simple explanation

It's the tilt people mean by a 'level swing' or an 'uppercut.' Zero degrees is a perfectly flat swing parallel to the ground, and 90 would be a golf swing.

The MLB average is about 32 degrees, and season averages run from around 20 for the flattest swings to around 50 for the steepest. Neither end is better; it describes the type of swing.

The end marks are the rough range of season averages given in the MLB glossary.

Detailed explanation

The same hitter's tilt changes with pitch location: flatter against high pitches, steeper against low ones.

It's easy to confuse with attack angle. Tilt is the slope of the whole plane the swing traces just before contact; attack angle is whether the sweet spot is moving up or down at the instant of contact.

It came out in the May 2025 batch of Statcast swing metrics, with data going back to the 2023 All-Star break, when bat tracking began.
